Hand-Knit Production FAQ: Your KOCO Questions Answered
Hand Knitting Manufacturing Questions: How We Work and the KOCO Process
Hand Knit Production Process
What is the lead time for samples?
Sample lead time depends on current workload and the number of colours used in the garment. Garments using multiple colours, including intarsia or Fair Isle, take longer than single colour garments.
What is the lead time for hand knitted garment production?
Production timing depends on the number of garments and the number of colours used. Stitch work itself does not slow production. Colour changes do.
How is hand knit quality control handled?
Quality control is carried out throughout the knitting process. Progress, measurements, and finishing are checked and shared through photos and videos via WhatsApp.
Where are the garments knitted?
All garments are knitted at KOCO hubs. Knitting is not done in private homes.
Can you send photos and videos of the garments being knitted?
Yes. Photos and videos are taken by the knitters on their phones and shared via WhatsApp. These are low resolution. High resolution photography or video can be arranged using an external photographer. Pricing depends on scope and duration and is quoted on request.
What is the lead time for swatches?
Plain swatches can usually be completed within one day.
How is knitting tension kept consistent?
A tension swatch is knitted and approved before the garment begins. Tension is checked regularly throughout the knitting of the garment to ensure it matches the approved swatch.
Hand Knitting Materials and Yarn
Do you have yarn we can choose from?
Yarn is sourced specifically to meet the needs of each customer and each project. We occasionally have leftover cones available, but colours and quantities cannot be guaranteed.
Can you send yarn cards?
We do not keep yarn in stock. We can source yarn and share high quality photos via WhatsApp. Knitted swatches can also be supplied and invoiced separately.
Can we feel the yarn before proceeding?
Yes. We invoice for knitted swatches. Standard swatches measure 20 × 20 cm.
What yarn do you usually use?
We use the yarn chosen by the customer.
Can we provide our own yarn for hand knit production?
Yes. If you provide yarn, KOCO will handle customs clearance in India.
Pattern Writing
What do we need to send to start a conversation?
An image of the garment style you are aiming for is sufficient to begin discussion.
What information do you need to write a pattern?
We can work out the required measurements. Once drafted, all measurements and details are reviewed thoroughly with the customer before knitting begins.
Why is pattern writing a separate cost?
Pattern writing is a separate part of the business and is costed independently from knitting.
Who owns the pattern copyright?
You do. The pattern belongs to you.
Knitters and Working Conditions
What hours do the knitters work?
Working hours were agreed when the business was established. Knitters work 6 hours per day: 9am to 12pm, lunch, then 1pm to 4pm.
How is waste managed?
Hand knitting generates minimal waste. Yarn quantities are calculated before knitting begins. Yarn packaging is reused where possible.
Hand Knit Pricing and Logistics
Are there minimum order quantities?
No. Orders of any size move through the same process.
When can you give pricing?
An estimate is provided before the first sample garment is knitted. Exact production pricing is provided after the sample garment is completed.
Do you iron garments?
No. Garments are not ironed.
Do you pack the garments?
Yes. Garments can be packed for shipment.
Can you print or supply labels?
No. If you supply labels, they can be attached to finished garments.
Do you wash garments?
No.
Who organises shipping?
KOCO organises shipping through a logistics agent.
Can we send buttons or labels to you?
Yes. Nothing should be sent without prior approval due to Indian customs requirements.
Do you source brand or care labels?
No. Labels are not available in the rural locations where knitting takes place.
How does payment work?
Invoices are issued at three stages: swatches, sample garment, and production. Each invoice itemises yarn, labour, freight, and pattern writing. All invoices must be paid in full before shipment. KOCO does not run accounts. Invoices are issued in Australian dollars.
